Located near Maui's North Shore, Haiku is a small rural community close to Pauwela that offers gorgeous scenery and a relaxed vibe. Haiku town is only two miles from the Northshore and Paia, and it is brimming with unique experiences in the town and surrounding areas. With a small population of around 9,000 people, you'll discover that Haiku is a laid back place with vibrant beauty.

Haiku is also along the famous Road to Hana that runs for almost 65 miles from Kahului to Hana along the coastline, and it is well-suited for either a sightseeing day trip or a more robust, multi-day journey. 1. Chase Waterfalls in Haiku and Along the Road to Hana

Maui’s unique terrain makes it home to dozens of waterfalls, and many of these are located just off of the Road to Hana. One of the most popular waterfalls is Twin Falls, which sits at Mile Marker 2. Twin Falls is a stunning sight as water cascades into a smooth pool of blue water surrounding by tropical plants and trees.

You can also find other smaller waterfalls by taking a scenic hike along the trail. Before continuing on your journey along Hana Highway, stop by the popular fruit stand in the parking lot. If you keep going on the Road to Hana towards Keanae, you'll find a collection of larger waterfalls and pools to explore starting around Mil Marker 20. 

2. Surf Check at Ho'okipa Beach Park

At Mile Marker 9 on Hana Highway, you will find Ho’okipa Beach Park. This is an 8.4-square-mile county park that is recognized as one of Maui’s top surfing spots. In fact, it hosts annual surfing events like the Red Bull Championship and the Aloha Classic. The highlight of the park is the sandy beach, which is the perfect spot to watch surfers wide waves.

The park also has outdoor showers, three picnic pavilions with grills and restrooms.

The hallmark of a great breakfast place is the quality and quantity of the bacon they give you, am I right? In this department Colleen's passes with flying colors, but they also excel in with all of their dishes. Breakfast at Colleen’s at the Cannery is one of the more popular things to do in Haiku as this charming restaurant has great food, a relaxed vibe with soaring ceilings and dark wood tables and flooring.

The menu showcases New American fare, and breakfast is served daily. You can start your day in Haiku with classic breakfast dishes including monster pancakes, eggs benedict, fresh fruit smoothies, breakfast burritos, pastries, espresso and other delicious treats.

4. Sake and Sushi at Nuka

Dining at Nuka is a true culinary treat with Japanese cuisine prepared with locally sourced and seasonal ingredients. The restaurant’s name is derived from the process of milling brown rice into white rice. From this process, the restaurant produces its own nukazuke, which is incorporated into many of the chef-prepared dishes.

The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner, and it offers a variety of sushi rolls, sashimi, rice bowls, noodle bowls, salads and other dishes.

After zip-lining, you can learn about the area’s military history with a museum tour. The museum has displays and artifacts from World War II.

8. Watch Big Wave Surfers at Jaws

Not far from Ho’okipa Beach, you will find Pe'ahi Jaws, which is recognized by surfers as having the biggest waves in the area. In fact, the biggest rideable wave in the world, which is known as Jaws, was here. The Billabong XXL Global Wave contest is held here annually, but you can typically spot well-known and pro surfers chasing waves here throughout the week.

If you prefer to watch the action, you can take in views from Pe’ahi Lookout or make the 1.5-mile walk to the beach.

9. See the Rainbow Eucalyptus Trees

Enjoying the unique ecosystems and vegetation, such as the rainbow eucalyptus tress, is among  one of the essential things to do in Haiku. The rainbow eucalyptus trees are a super popular attraction along Hana Highway. Also known as Mindanao gum trees, they stand out with their multi-colored bark. The hues streaking across the bark include bright green, maroon, orange, purpose and blue.

The rainbow of colors is created as the trees shed their different layers of bark. These are fast-growing trees that can reach 200 feet tall and 95 inches across the trunk. You can find the trees near Mile Marker 7 on Hana Highway as well as at Ke’anae Arboretum.
