Maui Pickleball: Find a Court and Play Today

Pickleball Maui

While pickleball was first played in Bainbridge Island, Washington as an improvised backyard game based on badminton in 1965, its popularity grew slowly over most of its history. However, pickleball has exploded in popularity around the country and on Maui over the last several years.

The Sports and Fitness Industry Association named pickleball the fastest-growing sport in 2021, 2022 and 2023. Currently, there are approximately 9 million people in the United States playing pickleball, and this number is expected to continue climbing as more people discover this fun, fast-paced sport.

What Is Pickleball?

Two people Playing Pickleball on Maui

While millions of people now play pickleball, many others are still unfamiliar with it and many are new to it on Maui. Pickleball can be played indoors or outdoors and is often viewed as a cross between table tennis and tennis. It is played on a 44-foot by 20-foot court with a 34-inch-tall net running across it. The gameplay paddles are somewhat larger than table tennis paddles.

The pickleball ball is a plastic sphere that is larger than the table tennis ball and that has less bounce compared to a tennis ball. Only underhanded serves are permitted. After being served, the ball must land in a 7-foot volley zone on the opposite side of the net before the opposing player or team can hit it. Pickleball uses side-out scoring like tennis and table tennis, which means that only the serving side can earn a point.

As is true in other areas across the United States, there is a growing interest in playing pickleball on Maui. Whether you are considering playing for the first time or you are an avid player already, there are several places where you can find dedicated courts for pickleball on Maui.
