Launiupoko was originally home to several ancient Hawaiian settlements and has long been used for fishing, growing taro and irrigation. However, it was settled in more modern times as a private estate of King Kamehameha V in 1859. King Kamehameha built a temple on the grounds as well as alaloa, shrines and burial grounds, making this a culturally and spiritually significant area.

Launiupoko remained in royal hands until 1917 when it was sold to a group of developers by Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop. Since 1925, the area has been a coveted residential community that is recognized for its quiet, laid-back ambience, sweeping ocean views, and elite residences. The area that is home to the temple and other attractions has now been converted to the 200-acre Launiupoko State Wayside Park. This beachfront park includes shade trees, a beach, pools, the preserved temple and a hale. The beach is known for having gentle waves, making it great for all types of surfers. 

The Makila Developments
