Great Wailuku Location
Just a few miles from Wailuku Country Estates, you can access all that the small town of Wailuku offers. This town was once the most popular tourist destination on the island, but Kaanapali and other communities in West Maui have taken over. As a result, Wailuku has strong appeal without the hustle and bustle of busy tourist areas on the island.
As you explore the town, you will find historic architecture and lovely gardens mixed in with modern shops and restaurants. The I'ao Theater is one of these buildings. It boasts Spanish Mission architecture and opened in 1928 to entertain residents with vaudeville performances and movies. It was listed on the state’s Register of Historic places in 1995 and the National Register of Historic Places in 1995.
Points of Interest Near Wailuku Country Estates
Wailuku is also home to The Bailey House Museum, which has numerous artifacts and displays on the history of the island. This former seminary features numerous artifacts from Duke Kahanamoku, an Olympic swimmer who also notably popularized surfing.
This small town is recognized as the doorway to I'ao Valley, which has been preserved as a National Natural Landmark since 1972. Here, you will find the Iao Needle rock formation and several hiking trails. The Kepaniwai Park and Heritage Gardens, which were restored in 1994, are located in I'ao Valley. They provide a nature center, a museum and conservation education.
The King Kamahaneha Golf Club, one of the best private golf clubs on Maui, is located south of Wailuku. The private golf club features a 74,000-square-foot clubhouse designed by the legendary Frank Lloyd Wright. The golf course is situated above the Maui Valley and offers views of the Pacific Ocean and Mt. Haleakala. With five sets of tees, the course is suitable for most skill levels.
Central Maui Offers Convenience and Adventure
If you travel a few miles east of Wailuku, you will reach Kahului. In addition to being home to the island’s main airport, Kahului provides you with premium shopping opportunities and dining options. Just outside of Kahului, you can tour the Maui Nui Botanical Garden. Spanning five acres, the purpose of the garden is to preserve both coastal and dry forest plants native to the area.
Some of the many other plants on display are numerous varieties of taro, sweet potatoes and sugarcane. You can also celebrate Maui’s outdoors with a visit to Kanaha Pond State Wildlife Sanctuary. Here, 86 bird species and more than 100 species of invertebrates and plants are protected.
You can experience a different side of the island with a visit to Alexander and Baldwin Sugar Museum. This museum, which is in Puunene, is dedicated to preserving the heritage of the island’s sugar plantation history, and it also hosts cultural events from time to time. More than 168 years of history are celebrated in the Mill Room, the Immigration Room, the Founder’s Room and other indoor and outdoor areas.
Kanaha Beach Park is a stunning place to spend a day, and it is particularly popular among windsurfers, swimmers, kite surfers, hikers and campers. This is a 40-acre park with a white sand beach and a canoe halau. Its many amenities include three sand volleyball courts and picnic tables with grills.
