Makena Will Take Your Breath Away

Makena Maui

One of the most appealing aspects of real estate in Makena is the presence of some of the most breathtaking white-sand beaches anywhere in the world. The splendor of the oceanfront property in Makena makes it some of the most sought-after real estate anywhere in the world.

While there is certainly plenty to do in the area thanks to the presence of great restaurants, world-class shopping facilities, snorkeling, hiking, and more, most people who choose to buy Makena real estate do so because they love the quick access to some of the world’s most glorious beaches. While all of the beaches in Makena are incredible, these are my five favorites.

Big Beach

Big Beach Makena

Big Beach is the most prominent beach in the world-famous Makena Beach State Park. Its white sand covers roughly 3,300 feet and spans widths approaching 100 feet between the edge of the water and the nearby mountain range. This beach is a great beach to hang with friends, bodyboard, surf, and to really feel like your in nature away from the resorts and properties. The shore break can be pretty strong here, so never turn your back on the ocean. There are three entrances, just look for a good spot to park and find your spot.

Residences aren’t as plentiful near this stretch of beach as they are in some other areas of South Maui, but the new lots for sale at Big Beach Estates across the road offer close access to one of the most beautiful beaches on Maui.

Little Beach

Little Beach Maui

Little Beach is identified by its position beside a landmark known as Pu’u Ola’i a 360-feet high cinder cone that is partially covered in native vegetation. The beauty of Pu’u Ola’i showcases the important role that volcanic activity played in the formation of Maui. Not only does this beach provide panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean, but it’s also a destination spot for geologists who are captivated by the variety of rock formations that have formed over the years.

Also, this beach is most commonly known for its “clothing optional” approach to life and the traditional Sunday night drum circles that take place by the water, making it one of the most unique beaches in Makena.

Po'olenalena Beach

Poolenalena Makena Beach

Also known as Paipu Beach, this stretch of beach was only known by Maui locals until recently. Thanks to some of the most breathtaking sunsets anywhere in the world and the fact that this beach still clears out significantly in the evenings, Po'olenalena Beach is an ideal spot for people who want to bury their toes in the sand, sit by the waters, and relax at the end of the day watching a great sunset. On the south end of this beach, you’ll find the gorgeous condos at Makena Surf Resort while the north end of the beach is marked by several high-end private residences.

Maluaka Beach

Maluaka Beach Makena

Maluaka Beach has perhaps one of the best vistas of any beach in South Maui. With the Pu'u Olai'i crater to the left, Molokini and Kahoolawe to the front, and Makena landing to the right, Maluaka captures a lot with one view. Maluaka is typically a very calm beach and features a nice, shaded grassy area to enjoy as well. The beach is great for snorkeling, paddleboarding, as well as people watching.

With so many people looking for a way to get to this coveted stretch of beach, Discovery Land Company, the developers at Makena Golf and Beach Club, have been working on developments that range from luxury condos to a subdivision featuring 13 homes known as Maluaka Estates. With so many housing options, you’re sure to find something you love that gives you quick access to Maluaka’s white sand, blue waters, snorkeling, and more.

Makena Cove

Makena Cove Maui

While it may be last on our list, it’s certainly not least. Makena Cove is often referred to as Secret Cove because of the way that it is tucked away in plain sight. A long-time favorite of locals, this seemingly secret stretch of beach is surrounded by the type of landscape that makes Maui one of the most popular destinations on the globe. Situated just a few miles from the resorts of Wailea, this beach allows you to quickly transition between relaxing on the beach and some of the shops and restaurants that locals and tourists love. The entryway to the beach is through a small rock wall that furthers the feeling of being tucked away in an island paradise. The surf can be pretty strong here but on a calm day, it's a great place to wade in the water and just chill!
