Makena State Park Features Local Favorite Big Beach
Beachgoers seeking an undeveloped shoreline appreciate the beautiful beaches in Makena State Park. This pristine site encompasses a stretch of Maui's southwestern coastline adjoining a thickly forested hillside. It offers magnificent Pacific Ocean views.
About Makena Beach State Park
This popular Hawaii State Park contains an eye-catching section of Maiu's shoreline, including several beaches. The most prominent, Big Beach, offers a broad expanse of fine white sand. It forms a thick crescent covering a length of nearly 3,300 feet. In some places, the beach spans widths of 100 feet between the water's edge and the adjoining hillside.
The sandy surface continues far offshore. Occasional rocky outcroppings of hardened black lava punctuate this location. Rocks appear especially prominent on the fringes of the beachfront.

Pu'u Ola'i: An Important Makena Landmark
Perhaps the most distinctive landmark in the area, a 360-foot high cinder cone named "Pu'u Ola'i, juts into the ocean on the northern side of Big Beach. Today vegetation covers portions of this rounded dome. It separates the biggest beachfront in the State Park from a much smaller, more sheltered, "Little Beach" extending to the north. Little Beach being known for its 'clothing optional approach' as well as the Sunday night drum circle parties.
Pu'u Ola'i showcases the importance of volcanic activity in the formation of Maui's scenic shoreline. Just like Molokini some distance away, it frequently attracts the interest of geologists. The site furnishes panoramic views of the surrounding Pacific Ocean waters.
Enjoy Some Fun in The Pristine Waters of Makena State Park
The long beachfront at Makena State Park appeals to vacationers and full-time residents alike. This scenic tropical oceanfront supplies a popular location for a variety of water activities. At various times, beachgoers swim, snorkel, surf, bodysurf, fish, and paddle watercraft along this strip of coastline.
The park supplies port-o-potties and trash cans close to the two primary "Big" beach entrances and the third entrance being undeveloped. However, since this area remains largely undeveloped, beachgoers discover fewer facilities here than in more developed sites. The length of the beach and the absence of protective offshore reefs sometimes result in very strong swells reaching the shore.
A Warm, Sandy & (Big) Beach
The thick layer of fine white sand here attracts the public to Makena State Park's tropical beachfront. This sandy site furnishes a popular location for activities like picnics, sandcastle building, and sunbathing. The surrounding park encompasses a total of 164.4 acres. Nature photographers discover many opportunities to enjoy capturing images of plants and wildlife.
Large waves sometimes crash onto the shore close to the water's edge. The swells may overpower inexperienced swimmers. Reportedly, in response to serious accidents caused by dangerous shore break conditions, the State recently placed two lifeguard stations on this beach. Lifeguards offer helpful information to beachgoers about current water conditions.
