This popular Hawaii State Park contains an eye-catching section of Maiu's shoreline, including several beaches. The most prominent, Big Beach, offers a broad expanse of fine white sand. It forms a thick crescent covering a length of nearly 3,300 feet. In some places, the beach spans widths of 100 feet between the water's edge and the adjoining hillside.
The sandy surface continues far offshore. Occasional rocky outcroppings of hardened black lava punctuate this location. Rocks appear especially prominent on the fringes of the beachfront.

Pu'u Ola'i: An Important Makena Landmark
Perhaps the most distinctive landmark in the area, a 360-foot high cinder cone named "Pu'u Ola'i, juts into the ocean on the northern side of Big Beach. The length of the beach and the absence of protective offshore reefs sometimes result in very strong swells reaching the shore.

The thick layer of fine white sand here attracts the public to Makena State Park's tropical beachfront. This sandy site furnishes a popular location for activities like picnics, sandcastle building, and sunbathing. The surrounding park encompasses a total of 164.4 acres. Reportedly, in response to serious accidents caused by dangerous shore break conditions, the State recently placed two lifeguard stations on this beach.
