The Types of Homes For Sale in Makawao
Makawao features a variety of different properties including the newly developed Hokuula subdivision at Haliimaile. In Makawao Town you’ll find many median sized and median priced properties that are great for residential living. Up on Olinda Road and on Piiholo Road, you’ll find larger properties with more acreage suitable for agriculture or for having horses.
Towards Pukalani, the Maui Uplands subdivision is one of the most sought after residential areas of Makawao. The homes in Maui Uplands are typically on half acre lots and many will have either an attached or detached Ohana.
What Makes Makawao Town Great
Makawao Town is a really charming and quaint area of Upcountry Maui. There are a handful of delicious restaurants such as Casanova or Makawao Public House, a few fun coffee shops like Espresso Mafia and Sip Me, and a variety of boutique clothing shops. There is also a great yoga studio called Mangala Yoga as well as Krank Cycles for all of your mountain or road biking needs.
Nearby is the Makawao Forest Reserve that features great hiking trails as well as great mountain biking trails. Other hiking in the area can be found at the top of Olinda Road at Waihou Spring Trail. Makawao sits on the slopes of Haleakala and has about 1,000 feet of elevation, as you go up Olinda or Piiholo Road, the elevation gets much higher and it feels like you’re in a Northern California forest. The lower temperatures can be a nice escape from the higher temps found at the coast.
Close To Everything, Yet Tucked Away
Makawao itself is a very quiet and peaceful place to live. The name Makawao actually means “Eye of the Forrest” and it sits on the edge of the main rainforests of Maui, meaning it also receives a great deal of rain throughout the year, especially in the winter. However, its not too far away from the surf and the sun of the Northshore in Paia as well all of the other fun things to do in Paia.
The rest of Upcountry Maui, including Pukalani and Kula, also offers a variety of other activities. There are many great things to do Upcountry including going up to Haleakala National Park, visiting the Pukalani Farmer’s Market on Saturday mornings, and enjoying some local beers at the Mahalo Aleworks brewery.
South Maui is about 30 minutes away and the airport is only 15 minutes away. Many choose to live in Makawao as it is close enough to everything, but also a little more private and quiet. Home prices in the area are a little lower than the island wide average and much lower than the resort areas of places like Wailea or Ka’anapali.
Searching Homes For Sale in Makawao
Many of the homes you’ll find in this area are older and many of the homes that can be in need of some repairs. One reason for this is the restrictions on water usage upcountry. Water meters are in extremely high demand and the waiting list is a mile long, so there are very rarely new homes that come for sale on the market. Many choose to buy a home in Makawao and remodel rather than trying to find land with a water meter to develop.
The new development of Hokuula is the first in a long time and has its own water supply through its own private well and private waste water management system. The community has approximately 150 new homes that are being completed in 2024.
Schools in Makawao
Makawao is also home to a handful of Maui's best schools. The of the top schools are located Upcountry in Makawao at Seabury Hall and at the Carden Academy. Seabury is a private school and is regarded as one of the best middle schools and high schools in the state. Founded in 1964, it is desginated as a US Dept. of Education Blue Ribbon School.
The Carden Academy serves children who are pre-kindergarden all the way through middle school.
