Every year since 1999, Kapalua has hosted the PGA Tour's previous season winners for a tropical kick-off to the new PGA Tour season. These champions journey to the lovely Kapalua Plantation Course every January to compete in the Sentry Tournament of Champions.
About The Kapalua Plantation Golf Course
Today, Kapalua actually boasts two superb 18-hole golf courses: the Kapalua Plantation Course and The Kapalua Bay Golf Course, regularly considered two of the best golf courses on Maui. Both offer championship golf conditions and exceptional Pacific Ocean vistas. The Kapalua Plantation Course in particular features abrupt changes in elevation in some places as well as a variety of playing conditions. Unlike the golf courses of Wailea, Kapalua's weather is much less predictable.
This acclaimed golf course draws PGA champs and public golfers alike to challenge it's often less than hospitable conditions. Play this course and you might enjoy a sunny breezy front nine and 30 miles an hour of wind and rain on the back.
This lovely Par 73 golf course extends over 7,411 yards in length. It offers broad fairways and a number of challenging holes (as well as a clubhouse, lockers, a driving range, and a practice green). Golfers have voted this course as the best in the State of Hawaii.
A Famous Site
Located at 2000 Plantation Club Drive, this prestigious golf course welcomes both the public and club members. Although the PGA Sentry Tournament of Champions remains the most widely covered event conducted here, the facility sometimes hosts numerous lesser-known private tournaments and charitable events, too. The course remains open on most days between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m.
Since the golf course opened, these links have welcomed many famous names in the sport of golf. Just a few of the prominent stars who have competed here in the past include Davis Love, III, Justin Leonard, and Tiger Woods. Some Remarkable Features of The Kapalua Plantation Course
The golf course nestles itself in the foothills of the scenic West Maui Mountains. One of its most striking characteristics concerns its variable elevations. In order to complete the course, golfers must direct shots both uphill and downhill. The 18th hole requires the ball to travel some 585 yards on a slope, for example.
Many golfers also discover wind significantly impacts their play in some locations during certain hours of the day. Strong breezes sometimes waft through this coastal site. Important Recent Updates
Ben Crenshaw, a well known PGA player, formed a partnership with Bill Coore to design golf courses in 1986. The company's portfolio includes work on many popular greens. Just a few of the famous courses designed by Coore & Crenshaw include:
- The Austin Golf Club Course in Austin, Texas (2001);
- The Clear Creek Tahoe Course in Lake Tahoe, Nevada (2009);
- The Ozark National Course in Branson, Missouri (2019).
One of the firm's earliest projects involved designing the Plantation Golf Course in Kapalua. It opened for the first time in 1991.
This year, the company finished updating the project. Plans for this upgrade became public for the first time in March 2018. Some of the renovations included resurfacing the links with new varieties of Bermuda grass and improving bunkers along the course. The Kapalua Plantation Golf Course is now open for play again on a limited schedule as of December 2020.
