The oceanfront micro-market of Halama Street stretches two blocks along the ocean in South Kihei, and it qualifies as one of the few neighborhoods in Maui rightfully credited as a hidden gem. In this small two-block expanse, you'll find homes that have managed to retain their personalities over the years, even as the demographics and vibe of Maui and Hawaii at large have changed drastically.


Being that Halama Street is only two blocks away from the bustling South Kihei Road, you might imagine these homes would be plagued with noise complaints. In contrast, Halama Street is known as a local oasis and the street is worthy of being one of the area's best routes for a quiet walk. At the south end of the street, it connects to Kalama Park and, along the way, there are more than half a dozen paths providing beach access.

Listing prices range from $1.4M up to nearly $7M for homes on the ocean, while homes across the street sell for around $1M. With that said, there has been a "beauty" renaissance recently where older homes have been taken down and replaced by larger and more stately residences. Of course, none of that changes the impressive room Halama Street provides.

The sizes of the lots on Halama Street are gene ours, ranging from 9,000 up to 20,000 square feet. Most have detached cottages as well, or "ohanas," which enhance the value and enjoyment of the property for everyone. 

Halama is a Rare Single-Family Luxury Neighborhood

If you visit Halama Street, you'll likely see for yourself just how expansive these homes are. One of the most dramatic is located at 1676 Halama Street. This oceanfront home is over 2,700 square feet in addition to a 2-bedroom, 864 square foot ohana, all sitting on just under half an acre of land. Its last listing price was a commanding $4.5M. 

With that in mind, not all homes are as new and flashy as that one. Another recent listing on Halama Street included a 5 bedroom, 4 bathroom home with a 1-bedroom ohana, which listed for just $2.75M on the water. Another one included a modest 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom home on one-third of an acre, listed at $1.4M. 

The great thing about homes on Halama Street with ohanas is that they make great rental properties or a place to put up the grandkids, in-laws, or friends when they come out to visit. As you can see, if you look closely enough in the area of Halama Street, it is possible to find hidden gems to fit just about any budget, but you have to know where to look and who to talk to.
